Private equity, private credit, property, infrastructure and other private assets can provide access to businesses, assets and sources of return and diversification that may simply not be available through listed markets.
But we believe there is an important distinction between having access to private assets and having a genuine private markets investment capability.
Our approach is built around two equally important capabilities:
- Unique and differentiated quality deal flow
- Institutional-grade investment governance.
One creates the opportunity. The other determines whether we should invest.
Finding opportunities worth seeing
Private markets work differently to public markets. There is no single exchange displaying every available opportunity.
Access is often relationship-driven, which means the quality and depth of the investment network matters. As does your size and scale and ability to act on the right opportunities at the right time.
Our approach is therefore not simply about generating more deal flow. It is about developing access to high-quality, differentiated opportunities and applying an initial filter before committing significant research and governance resources.
Put simply, we don't measure the strength of our private markets’ capability by the number of deals we see.
We measure it by the quality of the opportunities that make it through our process.
The discipline to say no
Seeing an attractive opportunity is only the beginning.
Before committing capital, we want to understand the investment from multiple perspectives:
- Manager and sponsor: Who are we backing, and are interests appropriately aligned?
- Investment case: What will drive returns, and what could cause permanent impairment?
- Structure: Where do investors sit in the capital structure and what protections exist?
- Valuation: Are the prospective returns attractive relative to the risks being taken?
- Liquidity and exit: How and when is capital expected to be returned?
- Portfolio fit: What role will the investment play alongside everything else the client already owns?
That final question is critical.
A compelling investment in isolation isn't necessarily a compelling portfolio investment.
Institutional discipline around every decision
Private assets can be long-term and illiquid. That makes the quality of the decision-making process particularly important.
Our governance philosophy is designed around a simple principle: investment conviction should be earned through scrutiny.
Decisions should not depend on the enthusiasm or judgement of a single individual. They should be challenged from multiple perspectives, assessed against consistent criteria and supported by a documented investment rationale.
Our governance framework emphasises common evaluation criteria, consistent research standards, clear documentation, auditability, accountability and structured challenge.
Governance isn't administration sitting around the investment process. It is part of the investment process.
It provides the discipline to challenge assumptions, identify risks and, importantly, walk away from an opportunity when the investment case isn't strong enough.
From individual deals to better portfolios
Ultimately, our objective isn't to assemble a collection of interesting private-market investments. It is to build better portfolios.
Every investment needs to earn its place. Depending on the opportunity, that could mean contributing income, growth, diversification, downside resilience or exposure to return sources that are difficult to access through public markets.
And the investment process doesn't end when capital is committed.
Our governance framework specifically considers risks including market, liquidity, operational, manager, valuation and governance risk.
We therefore think about private investing as an ongoing process:
Source → Filter → Underwrite → Approve → Allocate → Monitor → Reassess → Exit
Our approach
We believe a genuine private markets capability requires more than access to private assets.
It requires an ecosystem capable of finding differentiated opportunities, filtering them intelligently, underwriting them rigorously, constructing portfolios thoughtfully and governing investment decisions to an institutional standard.
That is the approach we are building.
Not more deals for the sake of more deals. Not private assets simply because they are private.
But better opportunities, subjected to better investment discipline, with a clear purpose inside the client's broader portfolio.
Because in private markets, access gets you to the table.
The real advantage is knowing when to invest and having the discipline to know when not to.
